400,000 Albums For Sale

16 Aug

Murray Gershenz, 88, known as “Music Man Murray,” has decided to sell his Los Angeles record store to pursue his new career in acting. He’s also trying to find a buyer for his rare 400,000-album collection. He has spent 72 years amassing his music trove, which includes 1930s-era Big Band crooners on fragile 78-rpm discs, early rockers on 45s, show tunes on LPs and pop artists on cassette tapes and CDs.

Pete Yorn – Free Download

Pete Yorn has a new self titled album coming out September 28, but he’s released a free song that I’m enjoying. All it takes is a simple tweet to download the song “Precious Stone” and I suggest you go get yourself a copy.

Hey Bands, Facebook Now Has BandPages

30 Jun

“Finally, Facebook has real BandPages.” Well, at least that’s what RootsMusic is claiming. It only took me about 30 seconds to realize that these guys have created something that every band wants, and more importantly, something that every band needs. We all understand that Facebook hasn’t exactly catered to bands or designers to give them the pages the need, so the guys at RootsMusic have create “BandPages” which basically allow you to create your own customized page that looks and feels like a real band page, right inside Facebook. If you’re a band, there’s no reason not to have one of these. They have both paid and free versions, and their service works alongside other great services like SoundCloud and GigaTools–to name a few. Definitely take a tour of their product and at least try the free version–you have nothing to lose and only fans to gain.

Here’s a few working examples for you to browse as well:

Free Independence Day Tune

29 Jun

House of Heroes just released a new song called “Independence Day for a Petty Thief” just in time for your 4th of July playlists. All you need to do to download is trade a tweet and you’ll be directed to download the new song. It sounds pretty good–not their best stuff, but still not bad. Click here for directions to download the new song.

Oh, if you’re a band and you’re going to release a free song–try putting a link to your website on the page that people download the song from. Yikes.

Vinyl + CD On One Disc

16 Jun

Musician Jeff Mills’ latest release is a hybrid CD + 5″ vinyl record on the same hunk of matter. I’d love to see a video of it in action or at least a view from the side so that I may begin to guess what it must be like to use it!

Meet: The Icarus Account

11 Jun

We sat down with Ty and Trey Turner of The Icarus Account and talked about getting signed, playing in people’s living rooms, and their overall writing process. The Icarus Account’s latest album “Love is the Answer” is self-produced and self-distributed and is definitely worth a listen.

Follow the Icarus Account on Facebook, Twitter, PureVolume, MySpace, and YouTube.

Free Mix From Starbucks

25 May

Starbucks has been on a roll lately with their latest summer Frappuccino promotions. First with their “happy hour” which gave us half off blended goodness from 3-5pm, and now their giving away free music! Starbucks has always been fans of music and it’s definitely a big part of the “Starbucks experience”. The new mix is completely free and I was actually shocked how simple it was to download. You actually only have to click one button and it auto loads iTunes and begins to download…shocking really.

Here’s the track listing:

Frightened Rabbit – Nothing Like You
Hot Chip – One Life Stand
Wintersleep – New Inheritors
Goldfrapp – Rocket
The Bamboos (featuring Kylie Auldist) – On The Sly
Macy Gray – Kissed It
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – Bad Blood
Yoav – Greed
Shout Out Louds – Walls
Wye Oak – My Creator

Click here for the download page. And I guess if you want you can upload to your iPod and go grab yourself a Starbucks Frappuccino for good measure–a vanilla bean Frappuccino with an add shot is excellent.

Summer (Or What It Sounds Like)

19 May

The kids over at Music For Kids Who Can’t Read Good have put together a great post of tracks that bring the summer in called “Summer (Or What It Sounds Like)“. I like to think of it as a rain dance for summer. And though we here at evade don’t support posting songs we don’t have the rights to, we can get behind great mixes. Go give it a listen–it’s fun and summer is here.
